Together But Minds And A Hearts Apart. Part 1

Sitting at the airport lounge watching people and their interactive modes was a very instructive experience and one that struck a new fear into me. For instance there was this family of five right in front of me. They were all equipped with the latest communication gadgets you can think about; dad's two ears were padded with two earpieces that clearly separated him from the real world into who knows where. Two of the boys were similarly decked but from time to time will interchange their earpiece to hear something their mum or dad was saying or to respond to something on the TV.

The last of them was busy on his iPad playing a game. He was so engrossed with whatever game he was playing that when he was asked to join the others to go to a nearby food stand to have a snack he just was not interested. Our flight was due in two hours and within that time nobody spoke to the other. Of course Mum was the only one without a gadget but who I am sure common sense and experience have taught to be " on her own" and do the good job of watching everybody’s backs.

Yet another young family. The only reason an outsider will know that the woman is in anyway connected to the man is because of the two year old safely strapped on the lap of the man. With occasional sounds made by the baby to signal the need for water or for attention, only then would the father utter something to the woman seated beside him. She would then respond as required and as necessary and continued with whatever she was doing on her phone. If I should hazard a guess, she is either on Facebook, Instagram or what'sapp or any other social media platform that engaged her enough to wait out the long hours before her flight.

How Did We Arrive Here?

This is the result of Innovations. Welcome to the digital world. A world that is creating great barriers and causing great divides between families without them even knowing it. To silence a kid and give mum some "peace" mothers are now known to surrender their mobile "weapons" to them as a form of distraction . They do this without as much as try to find out what exactly the kid is in need of. Worse still and most times they do not bother to monitor what the child is watching. Little wonder that the rise of children who watch pornography on their systems are on the increase. From virtual dating to virtual lovemaking these kids graduate to doing it real life. Teenage pregnancies are the most common sights these days as a result of children trying to match their virtual world with their real world.

The couples find solace in the digital cocoon as their escape from the real world. The men answer calls unending and of course some of them have converted their phones into their mini offices. The average male phone user is highly "techy" and so with the unlimited apps and softwares on almost every thing you can think of, these men create a false world where" no woman can oppress them" or be privy to. That is why men would almost kill if you tamper with their phone. It's a "highly militarized zone". BEWARE.

Technology is indeed creating a great divide; in fact a big gulf in families. According to a study reported by Jim Taylor, this divide has grown due to the increased use of technology among children in several ways. First, children’s absorption in technology, from texting to playing video games, by their very nature limit their availability to communicate with their parents. One study found that when the working parent arrived home after work, his or her children were so immersed in technology that the parent was greeted only 30 percent of the time and was totally ignored 50 percent of the time. Another study reported that family time was not affected when technology was used for school, but did hurt family communications when used for social reasons. Interestingly, children who spent considerable time on a popular social networking site indicated that they felt less supported by their parents.

To be continued….

REFRESH. RESET. REINVENT.

Given the challenges we face each day in our various lives, inwardly, a lot of us have given up and all we are doing is just tagging along with life. We are unnecessarily depressed and frustrated not knowing what to do or where to go. There are also those times when you come to an even more difficult point in your journey, and the urge to end it all comes, or the urge to go the other way becomes very strong when what you really need is an affirmation to let go of your current life and begin a new one. People are committing suicide every day when the answers are right there under their nose. George Elliot said that “It’s never too late to be who you might have been.” Therefore no matter how old you are, or how many mistakes you’ve made along the way, you can always retrace your steps and take the necessary actions to rediscover and achieve your true purpose in life.

“We attain freedom as we let go of whatever does not reflect our magnificence. A bird cannot fly high or far with a stone tied to its back. But release the impediment, and we are free to soar to unprecedented heights.” – Alan Cohen in this quote affirms that nothing can hold you back unless YOU let it. The sky is the limit when you release what’s keeping you from moving forward.

It doesn’t take this big, grand display of courage to make a change in your life. Sometimes, all you need to do is make the decision that you WILL begin exploring a new path.

Most times Lot is not just a human being. It could be any other weight that besets you. Very often we carry our Lot into our future.

Lot is a veil that stops you from seeing beyond your imagination, beyond your situation and underates your capacity to achieve.

This season we are in calls for innovation and creativity. It calls for stamina and strength. This is not the time to quit rather it’s a time to review our life strategies.

This is the time to take stock. It is time to refresh, reset and reinvent yourself. Yes it is doable. The question is how?

Review and Be Self Aware

“The first step towards getting somewhere is to decide you’re not going to stay where you are.” — John Pierpont Morgan

You must know where you are and accept your true position and its realities. Most times our problems start with our refusal to accept who we are and our true position. A good self-assessment will help you to know your limitations and your strengths. It will help you to set goals and set boundaries. More importantly it helps you to build your personal brand and cut a niche for yourself.

Take stock. Carry out an inventory of what you already have, what you are yet to have, your talents, strengths, shortcomings, friends, supporters, rivals, competition, family etc. Be grateful for what you have and reflect on them. Thereafter, make a list of what you don’t have. A list of what you don’t have may give you cause to be grateful as well as a source of inspiration. Is there anything stopping you from having them?

Knowing and accepting who you are will stabilize you and help you find inner peace as well as build your self-confidence and self-esteem. Being self-aware could help to unravel an ability in you that is under-estimated or un-tried through lack of opportunity, encouragement, confidence or training. It could also bring out a natural ability or aptitude that you never realised you possessed. There are many tools on the internet that will help you in this process.

Reset

So you are very far away from achieving your life goals and you don’t even seem to have any clue how it will happen. Your full potential is not manifestingand you are unable to meet up.Big deal. When your clock or watch is moving too fast or not moving at all or its slow what do you do? You never throw it away. YOU RESET. So why do you give up on yourself?

Stop for a minute and ask yourself what else to do to come to your place of destiny. This is not the time to give up. Quitters do not and will NEVER win.

Stop doing things the way you used to do it. Take a challenge to transform your life. No body promised you it's going to be easy or that the road will be smooth but be rest assured that if you take up this challenge you will be on a path to recovery. Take a 30 day challenge and write down new activities that can bring you back to form. Create daily visual reminders in your challenge with pictures of yourself or even role models etc.

See yourself as a human device that needs a hard reset which is a hardware operation that ends ALL current software operations in the system, in this case your old strategies, plans and ideas that have failed and restart a new operating system. Try it . It really works.

What some of us need right now is a factory reset which is the master resetand not an early retirement plan! Reset. Reset. Reset.

No More Excuses

According to John C. Maxwell, the number one leadership expert, excuses will exit you from who you were meant to be and shrink your stature. Stop blaming people for your inability to achieve. Stop recounting what people did to you and how they were clogs in your wheel. These are weights you do not need on your journey to the peak of the ladder. Stop seeing your limitations rather see your strengths. Stop seeing threats and see opportunities. Never allow excuses to weigh you down. Learn to drop the past and P.U.S.H. (push until something happens) forward.

Change Your Focus

Be mission and goal oriented rather than position oriented. If you understand your mission and goal in life and focus on it, God himself will propel you to your position. See yourself always as one on a mission and let your focus be how to achieve that mission irrespective of the challenges on your way. Have you discovered your mission in life?

Remove focus from yourself. Remove focus from your situation. You are on a journey. There is a reason for what you are going through right now. Whatever you are going through right now cannot stop you from fulfilling your purpose in life. Stop being hindrance conscious or“hinderance-motivated”. Be goal motivated. Be success inspired.

Recalculate & Reinvest

Recalculating involves asking the following questions

Am I prepared to start all over again? Do I have what it takes to start again?

Will I be able to face the shame and the scorn? Am I too old to make a fresh start?

Can I forsake my old ways, habits? There is only one answer to all these questions.

YES. YES. YES.

Re-Invent

Having survived the operating room of recalculating and reinvesting, its time to take the bull by the horn and present yourself in a new form or with a new image, new strategies, new thinking and new opportunities. Take a plunge. Have faith in God and do something you have never done before. Be bold and let go of the old things; acknowledge and accept the new things at all levels, social, mental, physical and even spiritual. The choice to reinvent is yours alone. Imagine and create the future you want and go back to your visual reminders. See yourself at the new place.

Manage Yourself

Finally stop having a pity-party. Pull yourself together. Take up the challenge and GO FORWARD. Remember always that you are irreplaceable and so make the best of you and leave a legacy of greatness.

A Case For Balance In Handling The Lekki British School Incident

On the afternoon of Wednesday, June 14th, 2017 during lunch time at the Lekki British School, Lagos and prior to their science lesson, one of the student's , (name withheld), went into the science laboratory and obtained an ingestible liquid. He poured it into the water bottle belonging to a fellow student (name withheld). Fortunately this bottle never got back to the girl following the prompt intervention of other students and teachers.

The school immediately swung into action and after thorough investigation and deliberations and in the best interest of all concerned especially agitated parents, the offending student was asked to leave the school premises to allow tempers to calm down. However, the incident has brought to light a few pertinent issues which we would like to address through this medium.

First, the children in question are pre-teens: eleven and twelve respectively. These are precious jewels with a potentially bright future. While it may be right for any offended parent to ask for “corrective actions” to be taken against an offending child when a situation arises, it is also pertinent for us not to forget that as pre-teens, this is the age at which children are beginning to experience hormonal outbursts which manifests in different forms. It is therefore the collective responsibility of the school, parents and relevant authorities to manage such situations, and ensure that each child including the offending one realizes their full potential. In line with the schools motto “a brilliant future” the most important task for us is to guide and counsel children to become useful to their parents and the society at large.

Secondly, no student at the school has access to any harmful, dangerous or noxious substances which are kept locked away under the control and supervision of chemistry teachers and technicians. That is standard procedure.

Thirdly, we would like to use this medium to reiterate that the use of social media should be restricted to constructive information at all times but most especially when it involves children whose future need to be protected.

At this point we want to commend the Lagos State Government, particularly office of Quality Assurance and the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team for coming to Lekki British School to verify and have firsthand assessment of the incident. This development is very reassuring as it shows that the State is concerned and interested. If necessary we are willing to work with the Lagos State Government Social Welfare System, to provide necessary support as and when required. This we would do through guidance, counseling and close monitoring. At Lekki British School, every Child has a brilliant future. We will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that every child that comes into our care attains his or her full potentials.

As an international school we teach our students to be self-disciplined and responsible individuals. To face the challenges of life with courage and wisdom, a school must be a beacon of hope where students feel secure, confident and get equal opportunity to build their future. Therefore the offending student was allowed to complete the examination in a monitored setting in order to have an academic record for the future. We did not want to throw the baby out with the bath water.

Lekki British School is one of the top schools in Nigeria in terms of facilities, pedigree and academic achievements and it is internationally recognized and affiliated. We have well trained and certified teachers who, along with our support staff, provide excellent pastoral care and individual student attention. We have strong values of discipline, integrity, respect for others and a robust approach to conflict resolution.

Lekki British is a Member of COBIS – Council of British International Schools. Member of AISA – Association of International Schools of Africa and we have 16 years of successful existence – high academic performance and placements of students at international universities. We want all parents, students and prospective students to feel rest assured that we are experienced at child life building and our goal is to produce children with a well rounded education.

MANAGEMENT
HELP! OUR CHILDREN ARE DYING

My ears are full. My heart is heavy. My eyes are tearing. My sleep disturbed. Our children are dying. Not a physical death. Thank God for that. But from something worse than that. Dearth of values.
We are faced with children with no sense of value, no direction, no identity and with total loss of conscience. The so called milenials.

I never dreamt that we would get to this level of decadence when our children would unashamedly pull down their clothes in the public with the intention to rape with adults applauding
I never thought I would come to a day when our police will publicly deny and rubbish a ctime with eye witnesses includin a good samaritan of no mean repute.

The nascent issue of rape is just one of the social problems we have with our youths. Robbery, 419, homosexuality, examination malpractices, are but a few.
What are mothers doing? What are the fathers doing.
A lot of homes today have absentee fathers

In our pursuit for money and career we have left "unpursued", unattended, unnurtured what matters most.
We are in era when we blame Government for everything.
An era when nannies and drivers have replaced the sacred roles of the parents.
An era when children are permitted to indulge in whatever they like in order not to dusturb parents.
An era when televisions and the social media have become the real life guides. An era when parents send their children to unknown mentors, to summer camps; anywhere as long as they are kept busy and away from home!
An era when both mummy and daddy leave home before the children wake up for breakfast and get home after they have gone to bed.
An era when most of the things parents know about their children is as reported by nanny, driver and school teacher.

I remember growing up, I always came home after school to meet my mum. Most times the food was ready but if not you quietly changed and joined her in the kitchen.

We too can be there for our children. Granted times have changed. Mothers no longer have that luxury but there are things we can do to bridge the gap.
For example mothers should look for flexible jobs that make parenting easy. The sad thing today is that such jobs are no longer attractive to mothers because of their personal wants and not needs. I am one of the advocates of women inclusion and equality but when it comes to our children we must draw a line. There is no sacrifice too great for our children. The presence of at least one parent especially the mother at home will among other things ensure that the spiritual, emotional, cultural and physical growth of the child.

By the way, how long father, how long mother, do you think or know you have on earth to spend with your children?

We may not be like Sweden where mothers are paid to stay home to parent their children at the crucial years of their lives. However the Government can put policies in place; like flexible working hours for mothers as well as ensure that even so they earn equal salaries with their male counterparts. Government must step up their financial empowerment programmes for women to make it easy for them to be self employed.
We all need to do this if indeed we are looking for stable, upright, honest children who will "attain great lofty heights" and build a nation where peace and justice reigns.

We just celebrated another children's day. By the next children's day what will be the fate of your child? Only you can answer that question. However my prayer is that they will be counted among the LIVING.

FRIENDSHIP REVISITED

So many things have happened recently that prompted me to revisit the meaning of the word “friendship”. Some of the experiences were personal and others I observed from very close quarters. We tend to use the word friendship loosely and that is exactly what I find very confusing. A lot of people have different notions of what friendship really is. Some assume friendship as soon as they meet a person and they accept them into their private lives without question. Others will like to know a person more deeply and much better, their backgrounds for example, compatibility issues etc. before considering a person as a friend.

According to the Wikipedia, “Friendship is a relationship of mutual affection between people. Friendship is a stronger form of interpersonal bond than an association. Although there are many forms of friendship, some of which may vary from place to place, certain characteristics are present and common in many types of bond. Such characteristics include affection; sympathy; empathy; honesty; altruism; mutual understanding and compassion; enjoyment of each other's company; trust; and the ability to be oneself, express one's feelings, and make mistakes without fear of judgment from the friend. While there is no practical limit on what types of people can form a friendship, friends tend to share common backgrounds, occupations, or interests and have similar demographics”.

As the saying goes tell me your friends and I will tell you who you are

What friendship is not

Friendship unlike what most people think these days is not having or liking you on Facebook. Very often you find the so called friends on Facebook assuming the position of closeness or even intimacy. That is absolutely out of order.

Friendship is not having you in my online data list. No doubt our online friends serve a purpose especially in the area of networking but for crying out loud they are not the same as real friends. Some of these people you may never meet them in real life or even attach a face to their names!

Friendship is not having a name in your guest data compiled for the purpose of buying “aso ebi”, or making your party robust, or swelling the crowd.

Friendship should operate at a level playing field. It’s not puffed up or acts superior. Friendship puts a relationship above being right or wrong, having or not having and more importantly it does not put you down.

I have watched some so called close friends and I always see a disconnect. If you have a rich friend, should his wealth not rub off on you? Your friend has 5 cars and you don’t have any. Is that true friendship? I know a couple of friends. They have been together forever; one so rich the other barely managing to survive. Yet they are almost inseparable. Is friendship only for joints to eat “asun”, small chops or to drink

Good friendship must have some form of equity. Even though there may not be a standard way of measuring what each party gets in a friendship or the contributions and benefits for each person however a rich man’s friend should also have some semblance of wealth.

Friendship should be viewed as an exchange in social behavior that may result in both economic and social outcomes. Putting it mildly, friendship should advance the self-interests of both parties. In other words friendship if true should advance your interest, add value (both economic and social and even spiritual) to you.

We must not lose sight however of friends that are impossible to lift above their “ground” level. No matter your efforts they just remain who they are and people may erroneously blame you for being uncaring and even responsible for their misfortune. These are exceptions.

Even though this article is not focused on what makes friendship thrive or fail, it is important to note that every relationship has to be serviced and nurtured otherwise it would fail. For friendship to thrive there has to be effective communication, forgiveness, openness, empathy, sympathy, love, respect, discipline, honesty etc. The absence of all these can never make a good friendship.

Qualities of a true Friendship

Permit me to use an illustration from the Bible of a friendship between two people; one a Prince and the other a mere subject who was no more than a shepherd; Jonathan and David. I will discuss only a few

1. Sacrifice. True friendship would sacrifice for one another. Jonathan as the heir to Saul was not jealous or envious of David even when he recognized that David would one day be king of Israel. Rather he gave David his clothes and military garb an action that meant that Jonathan submitted to God’s will and sacrificed his own right to the throne.

2. Loyalty. Jonathan was loyal to David till the very end even at the risk of losing his own life.

3. Freedom of Expression. True friendship should allow the freedom of expression of emotions, feelings. Both parties should be at liberty to be who they are. True friendship must have an emotional attachment and this helps to strengthen the bonds between the parties.

4. Poverty Alleviation. True friendship as noted earlier should add economic value especially where a partner is in a position to do so

5. Encouragement. A good relationship must be a source of encouragement. It should inspire and strengthen. It must provide a pillar of support especially in times of crisis.

6. The famous song Lean on Me by Bill Withers summarizes what true friendship should be

"Lean On Me"

Sometimes in our lives
We all have pain, we all have sorrow…
Lean on me when you're not strong
I'll be your friend, I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need somebody to lean on.

	Please swallow your pride
If I have things you need to borrow
For no one can fill those of your needs
That you won't let show.

You just call on me, brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on.
I just might have a problem that you'll understand,
We all need somebody to lean on.

	If there is a load
You have to bear
That you can't carry
I'm right up the road
I'll share your load
If you just call me.
Call me if you need a friend

12 Ways To Stand Out From Your Colleagues

That, respect gives you an added clout and beefs up your status is an understatement. We all love to be respected especially in the workplace. We want our views to matter and our presence to be acknowledged.

Respect is so crucial when it comes to your career development. It comes into play when the top-notch are considering your ideas, when they’re choosing people to participate in projects, of course when they are thinking about who is getting promotions or financial raises.

The tips below are meant to provide you with invaluable ways to earning and keeping respect amongst your colleagues at work and your team in general, likewise others who come in contact with you. They will help you to be outstanding and be regarded as invaluable long after you have left the team.

1. Be Good at What You Do

Don’t spend your time thinking about being respected; rather, spend the time doing your job really well. Get a reputation for being very good at what you do. As a career expert, Jennifer Winter explains, “It’s hard to ignore results, and when you’re striving for the respect of your colleagues, one of the best things you can do is show you’ve got the right stuff.”

2. Be Right in Time and Never Miss a Deadline

Strive to get a reputation for being incredibly dependable and on point. That is, any promise you make—be it a date to finish a project, an appointment, or something else—you keep to it. People that matter will love to work with you.

3. Dress Up Within Proportion

You know the whole idea of “dressing for the job you want”? While you should dress a little nicer than you are expected to, try not to over dress to the extent that you look out of place, or you do not fit into the environment. Always be judicious in your choice of wears.

4. Respect Everyone

There is a cliché that says “you get what you give”. In order to command respect, you have to give it too, and not just to those at the top. People will notice if you’re nicer to the bosses but mean to the receptionist or delivery guys. Be genuine in your dealing with people rather than a brown-noser. Even you don’t find the person agreeable, show respect to all and sundry because the wind of change blows often especially in the corporate world, so situations and positions change.

5. Connect To the Right People

Strike relationships with those who are well respected and much liked in your organization. This is not just about some topmost personalities here, just think of anyone who has a great reputation around the office. Remember you are judged by the company you keep. Connect to those who have the right aura and who can influence you positively.

6. Be Innovative

Innovation is not just about inventing something. Its about thinking out of the box and being able to provide solution. Be that guy who fixes problems. Be inspiring and have a spot near you where people can read inspiring quotes or nuggets for success. Increase the tempo and fire up enthusiasm. Be the missing link!

7. Become A Connector

Connect with one or two people in another company who may be able to help with a problem a co-worker is facing, a friend who may be a great sales lead, or anyone else who you think could move the company forward? Introduce them to your own team! Doing this displays that you have an impressive network—most importantly is that you’re willing to share it in order to help others.

8. Use Less Of “I” and More of “We”

Research has shown that people tend to use the word “I” more frequently when communicating with people they feel are more powerful than them. Do you want some leverage? Monitor your use of “I,” you should rather use more of “We.” The people you’re talking to, will view you as a bigger person without ever knowing why.

9. Be Willing to Ask For Help

Many people think, asking for help depicts that you don’t know what you’re doing or even a sign of weakness. If done right in your team work and partnership, it reveals your strength of character. First, it shows the person that you are open to other people’s opinion. Second, it will show that you’re productive enough not to waste tons of time trying to figure it out yourself. It also shows that you care about your work as well as your professional growth- enough to admit when you don’t know something, or you need more clarity.

10. Lend A Helping Hand

Whenever you have an extra time, ask your boss or another colleague if there’s anything you can help out with or take over for them. They will appreciate it when you lighten their load, and your willingness to always help will not go unnoticed.

11. Be a Good Listener.

Learn to listen. Really listen. Nothing will make people lose interest in you quicker than if they feel that your focus is always somewhere else whenever they are talking to you. So next time you’re in a conversation, ensure you’re really engaged. Utilize open body language, don’t let another thing distract you, and always ask validating or clarifying questions to show you’re paying attention. Sometimes all a colleague needs is someone who cares enough to listen. Be that person.

12. Own Up to Your Mistakes And How You Want To Fix Them

According to Winter: “I know, it sounds a bit counterintuitive, given you want your clients to think you’re a genius, but trust me: They know nobody is perfect. In fact, your clients will probably get a bit suspicious if you never, ever, make a single mistake. Admitting when you do, however, shows them you’re confident (and humble) enough to face the music. In my experience, that’s a trait most people respect.”

Admitting that you messed up and then not doing anything about it isn’t going to garner you much respect. Instead, when you own up, also make sure to come with a plan of how you’re going to fix things. And if you’re not certain about what to do, try to at least come up with a few options or seek help.

By: Nkechi Ali-Balogun
